Sustainability at Hartje
Our contribution to protecting the environment and climate
There are plenty of actions to be taken and details to be observed to ensure a better protection of our environment and climate. As a bicycle manufacturer and reliable spare parts supplier, HARTJE is a major contributor to the mobility revolution. And we also work tirelessly on reducing our carbon footprint.
Paper instead of plastic
Recycling of packaging: We reuse cardboard boxes we receive from our suppliers in HARTJE deliveries, and supplement any shortfalls with second-hand boxes from a regional partner company.
Recycled materials for our shipments: Cellulose-based mailing bags, air cushions made of paper instead of plastic, and paper-based adhesive tape – virtually all of our packaging material can be disposed of in paper recycling. The only plastic is in the little pouches we use for small parts, and they are made of 100% recycled plastic with the lowest possible material thickness. These are returned to the material cycle after use. Our bottom line:
- Between 36 and 48 metric tons of cardboard saved annually
- More than 80% cardboard boxes reused for parts shipments
- Where unavoidable, any plastics we use are made of 100% recycled materials
Sophisticated logistics
Our new HARTJE small parts warehouse for the bicycle sector is a big step forward. Automated goods transportation across four warehouse levels and the so-called "order forwarding" means that more goods are fitted into one package. Previously decentralised worksteps are now bundled in a central packing space. In other words: fewer worksteps, less work hours, and fewer package items per delivery note. For each new project, the resource-efficient use of materials is always a key consideration: As part of the development of our new HARTJE bicycle warehouse in Hoya, we introduced paperless order picking and implemented the technology in other areas as well.
Smart building technology
Sustainability and efficiency are also a big consideration at HARTJE when it comes to energy supply: Our original head office in Hoya operates its own co-generation plant which delivers heat and also some of the electricity we use. We generate more electricity in photovoltaic systems on the rooftops of our newer company buildings. The bicycle warehouse and manufacturing plant at the location draw district heat from a nearby biogas plant. Low-energy systems like underfloor heating for the halls, and motion sensors for lighting help to lower energy consumption considerably. Nighttime interruption of all non-essential power circuits eliminates standby times.
Paper & Digital
Climate-neutral into the future: All printed materials at HARTJE are made with FSC-certified paper. Many communication channels are already fully digitised. Our goal: a balanced mix of sustainably printed information and easy-to-access online information like our digital online presentation tools for retailers. Our retailers can also do their part to improve sustainability: The receipt rolls from .kobon, which can be ordered via our ERP system, are chemical-free and can be disposed of in paper recycling.
Certified disposal
Car workshops, retail businesses and industrial enterprises generate special waste, such as brake fluid or lead batteries, which must be disposed of in accordance with strict legal regulations. As a cooperative partner of the PARTSLIFE Initiative, it is important to us that we support our HARTJE dealers and partners with the safe and proper disposal of waste. The PARTSLIFE Order Online System (POOL) enables the quick and easy ordering of waste disposal online. POOL takes into account individual disposal needs and provides its customers with legally compliant, certified waste disposal.
Rücknahme von Kunststoff-Verpackungen
Im Rahmen des Sommerfahrplans erweitern wir unseren Service, um einen noch nachhaltigeren Umgang mit Kunststoff-Verpackungen zu ermöglichen. Ab sofort nehmen wir Beutel-, Stretch- und Luftpolsterfolien zurück. Dies umfasst unter anderem Kunststoffbeutel (inklusive Aufklebern), Stretchfolien von Paletten, Schrumpffolien sowie saubere Luftpolsterfolien.
Nicht zurückgenommen werden können stark verschmutzte Folien, etwa mit Ölen, Fetten oder Chemikalien, sowie gemischte Abfälle wie Styropor, Karton oder Hausmüll und sehr nasse Folien, um Schimmelbildung zu vermeiden.
Diese Verpackungen sammeln wir über unsere regulären Retourenfahrten und transportieren sie nach Hoya. Dort erfolgt die Übergabe an unseren Partner Weser Wertstoff, der das Material professionell recycelt. Das recycelte Material wird unter anderem zur Herstellung neuer Folienverpackungen genutzt – ein weiterer Schritt in Richtung einer nachhaltigeren Zukunft.
