CONTEC Via Explorer Pannier Bag Wins German Design Award 2027

The CONTEC Via Explorer has been named a “Winner” in the “Excellent Product Design – Bicycles & E-Bikes” category at the German Design Award 2027. This places the rack-mounted bag from HARTJE’s own bicycle accessories brand among the “outstanding design achievements that are considered pioneering in their respective categories.” The official award ceremony will take place in Frankfurt am Main on 29 January 2027, where the winners will receive their certificates. The winners’ gallery is already available to view online at https://www.german-design-award.com/galerie.

Two Awards for the Via Explorer

A Closer Look at the Via Explorer

The Latin word “Via” means “way” or “road” and lends its name to CONTEC’s bicycle bag collection, which offers practical luggage solutions for every type of journey. In 2025, the six-member team breathed new life into the five-year-old Via range. Building on the previous model and bestseller, the Via.Back rack-mounted bag, they developed the Via Explorer, refining and optimising its design and functionality based on direct customer feedback.

The Via Explorer is the Trojan horse of the collection: compact and understated on the outside, yet surprisingly spacious and versatile on the inside. In fact, the rack-mounted bag can be expanded in three different ways. The large main compartment can be extended upwards, while opening the two side compartments reveals a pair of fold-out panniers. These retain their shape thanks to the integrated base panels, hooks for attaching them to the rear stays and zippered closures. Inside, alongside the main compartment, there are two small internal pockets and a zippered pocket on the inside of the lid. On the outside, the bag features a mesh pocket on the lid and an elastic pocket at the rear, ideal for storing items such as a water bottle or jacket. When fully expanded, the Via Explorer offers a generous 37 litres of storage capacity.

The bag’s water-repellent outer fabric, made from 100% recycled polyester, helps protect belongings from the elements. In heavier rain, the included rain cover provides additional protection against moisture. Reflective elements on the Via Explorer also improve visibility in traffic after dark.

Thanks to its compatibility with MIK 2.0, AVS, Racktime Snap-it and Racktime Snap-it 2.0, the Via Explorer can be mounted easily and securely on a compatible system luggage rack. If the bicycle is not equipped with a MIK, AVS or Racktime rack, the adapter plate can simply be replaced. The Via Explorer features a double-layered base secured with a hook-and-loop fastener. Lifting one of the base panels reveals the adapter plate screws, allowing the plate to be removed and replaced. The included carrying straps also make the Via Explorer comfortable to carry and easy to take anywhere.

Its thoughtful design and high level of functionality make the Via Explorer a truly award-winning rack-mounted bag.
